MARRIAGE COLLECTION

HANDIRAS

Handira is an extraordinary Berber rug handmade in Morocco! Made by the Berber women of the High Atlas, Handira is woven from pure virgin wool.  It has wide vertical strips of cotton thread, then it is embroidered with hundreds of metal sequins sewn one by one by hand.

At the time, the Handira was a wedding blanket according to Berber traditions. The bride's relatives wove the Handira for several weeks and then it was decorated with hundreds of metal sequins. During this period, women close to the bride shared confidences and fears.

On the wedding day, the bride wore the Handira on her shoulders like a cape, to join the groom. The bride's arrival could be heard throughout the village thanks to the many sequins that brushed against each other! The traditional Handira Berber carpet of Morocco was usually white or cream in color, and then embellished with small coins or silver sequins.

Today, Handira has become a much talked about and popular decorative accessory. Handira fits perfectly into a  modern decor to bring a cozy and authentic touch, complemented by cushions of the same or different patterns.

This item is a piece of craftsmanship and as such, is handmade: there may be small variations in tone or size. Each piece is unique!

You will love having one in your home, because each handmade piece carries a heritage, tells a story about a people, the Berber people.

Handiras are also a symbol of happiness, fertility and protection against evil.

And it's these little stories that bring SOUL to your home.
